What are crowns?

A crown is an artificial restoration that caps over the remaining part of a tooth, protecting it from more damage and improving its appearance. Crowns are most commonly made of gold, porcelain or a combination of the two.

Who are crowns for?

You may need a crown if you:

• Have had a root canal.
• Have sustained severe tooth loss.
• Need to replace existing crowns.
• Need to protect restored teeth from the risk of future damage and wear.

Stages of treatment

Initial examination:

• We will examine your tooth to establish the extent of the damage, and to rule out the need for a root canal beforehand.

Preparation:

• An impression of the tooth being crowned will be taken, and of neighbouring teeth, to allow our dental technician to create a crown that’s of optimum shape and size.
• We will select a tooth shade that’s in keeping with your existing teeth, to ensure the most authentic result.

Creating your crown:

• Whilst your permanent crown is being made, you will be given a temporary crown, allowing you to chew and bite.

Fitting your permanent crown:

• During a second appointment, your permanent crown will be fitted and small adjustments will be made if necessary.
