Root canal treatment has come a long way since the days of the past.
Once known as being an invasive procedure, the root canal treatment of today causes minimal discomfort and has the potential to salvage a tooth, helping you to avoid a dental extraction.
What is root canal treatment?
This treatment is appropriate when the pulp of a tooth has become infected, and here at Ascot Dental Suite, our dentists are highly diligent in carrying out this complex treatment.
Who is root canal treatment for?
When the soft tissue inside the root of a tooth becomes infected or inflamed, a root canal is a restorative procedure that can treat it. Infection and inflammation can occur as a result of deep decay, repeated procedures on the tooth in question, or a crack or chip.
Why have root canal treatment?
It’s always our goal to do everything we can to preserve your natural teeth, and a root canal is a way of achieving this when the pulp of a tooth has become infected. Having a root canal will save you from requiring restorative treatment and give you a healthy tooth you can keep in great condition with regular brushing and flossing thereafter.
You will also have better-biting forces to enjoy the foods you love best without having to worry about pain. As infected teeth often appear grey, you may have lost your love of smiling since sustaining the infection. Thanks to your beautiful and bespoke new crown post-treatment, you’re likely to find your volition to smile returns, along with your confidence.
Stages of treatment
Initial examination:
- A thorough examination of the tooth. Discussion with you about any symptoms you have.
Cleaning the tooth
- Your dentist will create a hole at the centre of the tooth and use disinfectants to clean the area, which is then dried.
- A rubber filling is inserted and a temporary filling is used to protect the tooth from further decay.
Placing your crown
- We will design a beautiful bespoke crown to replace your temporary filling. Your crown will be a match for your tooth shade and will look in harmony with the shape of your existing teeth.
FAQ
Is it painful?
Thanks to the progress made in modern dentistry, root canal treatment should not cause any major degree of discomfort. You will be given local anesthetic before treatment takes place, and any pain you feel can be controlled with over-the-counter painkillers such as paracetamol.
If you find you are in extreme pain upon returning home after a few days, please contact us.
How much does it cost?
Please see our price list here.
How long is recovery?
You should find discomfort subsides after a few days following treatment. There is no recovery period after your bespoke crown has been placed, so you can go out into the world and enjoy the benefits of a new smile straight away!
Aftercare?
We recommend avoiding extremely hot or cold food and drink, as this may cause some sensitivity in the days after treatment. Avoid biting on hard food whilst you have a temporary filling or a crown to prevent any chance of damage or cracks.
However, once your permanent crown has been placed at a second appointment, you can care for your newly restored tooth just like your existing teeth.
Will it damage my natural teeth?
Root canal treatment will not impact the health or appearance of nearby teeth.
