FAQ
Does it hurt? Is there any drilling?
No, not at all. Composite bonding is one of the most comfortable cosmetic dental treatments available. Because we are only adding to your tooth, there’s no need for any drilling into the tooth structure and, in almost all cases, no need for any anaesthetic injections. You can essentially sit back and relax while we transform your smile.
How much does it cost?
Please see our price list here
How long is the recovery?
You may experience some very minor sensitivity (if any at all) after treatment.
When will I see the result?
Composite bonding takes only one appointment to perform and you will see the results straight away.
After care?
You can look after your newly bonded tooth just like your existing teeth. You should avoid biting hard objects like ice or pencils, as these can cause your bonded tooth to chip.
Will it damage my natural teeth?
Composite bonding is a minimally invasive treatment that requires very little, if any, removal of your natural tooth enamel.
How is it different from veneers?
The main difference is that composite bonding is a direct, ‘additive’ procedure – we add the resin directly to your existing tooth. Veneers, on the other hand, are thin shells of porcelain made in a lab that are bonded over the front of your teeth, which often requires some of the natural tooth to be removed. Bonding is less invasive, quicker, and more affordable than porcelain veneers, making it a fantastic first step into cosmetic dentistry.
How long does it last?
With good care, you can expect your composite bonding to last for around 5 to 7 years, and often longer. The key to making it last is treating your bonded teeth just like your natural teeth: brush and floss regularly, attend your routine check-ups, and try to avoid biting down on extremely hard things like ice cubes or pen lids. If you ever do get a small chip, it’s usually very easy for us to repair.
I have a small chip on my front tooth. Can bonding fix that?
Absolutely. Fixing chipped teeth is one of the most common and effective uses for composite bonding. We can rebuild the chipped area with the composite resin so precisely that it will look and feel just like your original tooth. It’s a quick, painless way to restore your tooth’s natural shape and your confidence in your smile.
Can you use bonding to close the gap between my front teeth?
Yes, in many cases, we can. Composite bonding is a fantastic and very popular option for closing small to medium-sized gaps (diastemas). We carefully add a small amount of resin to the teeth on either side of the gap to widen them slightly, closing the space. It’s a brilliant way to achieve a more uniform smile without the need for braces.
My teeth are quite crooked. Is bonding a substitute for braces?
Composite bonding is a cosmetic solution, not an orthodontic one. It’s brilliant for masking minor imperfections and can create the illusion of straighter teeth by altering their shape. However, it doesn’t actually move your teeth or correct your bite. For more significant alignment issues, a treatment like Invisalign would be more suitable. We can assess your teeth during a consultation and advise on the very best option for you – sometimes it’s even a combination of both treatments for a full ‘smile makeover’
I smoke / drink a lot of red wine or coffee. Will it stain easily?
The composite material we use is quite stain-resistant, but it can stain over time, much like your natural teeth. If you frequently consume things that can cause staining, you may find you need a professional polish more regularly to keep the bonding looking its best. Good oral hygiene is key. While it is more susceptible to staining than a porcelain veneer, it is also much easier to polish or repair if staining does occur.
